This Fall & Winter season there will be a battle going on. With back to school sales going on around Fall and the Holiday season the battle for portable market share will be between the Veteran Notebook Computers and the Newcomer to the game Netbook Portable Computer. Who will come on top? Since Netbook isn’t quite at the professional level yet, this will only be a 6 Round Amateur fight. Round 1 - $Price$ One of the main factors in a mobile computer purchase is the price. Consumers want to get the most bang for their buck, but it isn’t as easy as that for Netbooks and Notebooks. People need to decide whether they want power or portability. Netbooks are certainly more limited in what they can do, but are much smaller and portable. Do you need multitasking? Do you need to edit video/music? If so, splurge a little more and get a Notebook. Netbooks are a niche product, and that niche is Internet surfing, word processing and email reading. Round Winner: Tie Round 2 – Battery Life Most Notebook computer now a days can pack quite a punch. They are able to play the newest games, run multiple programs at once, and play the newest DVD & BluRay movies with stunning picture, but this all comes at a price. Netbooks on the other hand boast up to 6-7 hour battery life due to them having as many bells and whistles to suck up precious battery life. If you don’t want to carry around multiple batteries or be tethered to a wall every few hours, Netbooks are for you. Round Winner: Netbook Round 3 – Size & Weight Are you my Daddy? Again, this is basically based on the preference of the purchaser. Notebooks are obviously bigger, heavier and more bulky so are more difficult to carry. Netbooks can be thrown in a backpack, briefcase or even a purse with ease. Notebooks weigh on average 8 – 10 pounds, where Netbooks can weigh as little as 2 pounds. If you have limited workspace, then a Netbook is the way to go. Your call. Round Winner: Netbook Round 4 – Screen Size Obvious winner, Notebook. With screens that can range from 14? to 17?, the Notebooks screen size tower over the tiny 10.1? screens of Netbooks. Easy decision, if you need reading glasses….go for a Notebook. Also, Netbooks generally have much lower resolution, making things look worse than a Notebook. Round Winner - Notebook Round 5: Computing Power Another clear winner. Notebooks are build for portability, but are designed to handle your everyday computing needs. From games to movies to video editing, Notebooks are the way to go. With lesser processors and less RAM, Netbooks simply cannot match the power of Notebooks. Round Winner: Notebook Round 6: Keyboard Let’s face it, the Netbook is small. That means smaller keys, smaller space in between and less keys fit within the Netbooks tiny frame. That mean if you have trouble typing on a Notebook, you will have twice as much trouble typing on a Netbook. Round Winner: Notebook Round 7: Connectivity Both the Notebook and Netbook have WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, making both products extremely mobile. The one aspect that gives the Netbook a slight edge is that Cell Phone carriers are adding the capability to share a mobile phones 3G connection with the Netbook. It should be noted that a Notebook can use a Wireless Internet card and achieve the same function, but at a higher price. Round Winner: Tie Results: Round 1 – Price Round 2 – Battery Life Round 3 – Size & Weight Round 4 – Screen Round 5 – Power Round 6 Keyboard Round 7 – Connectivity Total: Netbook X X X X 4 Rounds Notebook X X X X X 5 Rounds And the Winner is……….Notebooks! The main point though, is that a Notebook and Netbook are great at what they are intended to do. Netbooks are designed for ultra convenience, portability and battery life. Notebooks are designed to be a desktop computer that you can pack up and take with you. The one big factor in the Netbookw vs. Notebooks fight is that Notebooks can do anything a Netbook can do, and be better while doing it. Netbooks can do a couple of things well, word processing, Internet surfing, emailing and very basic computing tasks. Bottom line, a Netbook will never replace a Notebook. It is up to you the buyer to weight the pros and cons. Happy Shopping! |
