A survey of Christian Counselors indicated twelve key functions, as noted below, were developed from this survey. The key functions identified were: Personal development • Developing a counseling model that integrates a Christian world-view with modern psychology • Staying current with developments in the field through reading and seminars • Praying for help in counseling process and for the client Working with the client through the counseling process • Building a relationship with the client • Setting boundaries • Helping the client tell his/her story • Diagnosing the client’s problem • Developing, following and updating a therapy plan • Helping clients see sin as the basis of his/her pathology and that change comes through changing the client’s heart and renewing the client’s mind • Holding the client responsible and challenging the client • Writing case notes of the counseling sessions Developing the counseling practice • Building a practice The activities identified can be divided in to three categories. The first category relates to the counselor and his/her personal and professional development of overall counseling skills as well as improving self. The second category involves the counselor’s actions in working with the client during the counseling process. The third category describes the counselor’s personal activities in the business of growing a counseling practice. The Christian counselors surveyed and the literature reviewed support the fact that the role of the counselor involves functions related to the counselor, the client as relates to counseling process and finally building the counseling practice. From the discussions with the counselors and the review of the literature it is clear that the role of a professional counselor is a multifaceted process which to say the least is more than difficult to master. |
